Veteran Marine Tomas Venegas Jr., 41, of Elmira, died unexpectedly on June 20, 2025. Born in Queens, NY, Tomas proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 2001 to 2009, achieving the rank of Lance Corporal. He served overseas in Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
He was awarded the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Tomas was known for his dedication to family, heartwarming smile, and generosity to others. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, fitness, and traveling with his dog, Rook.
He is survived by his parents, Thomas Venegas Sr. and D. Rita Venegas; his daughter, Tatyana; and his sisters and brothers-in-law: Saraann Williams and Ronald Williams Sr., Melissa Johnston and Christopher Johnston Sr., Stephanie Venegas, and Angela Preston and Adam Preston. He is also survived by five aunts, one uncle, five nieces, five nephews, and nineteen cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother and paternal grandparents, two aunts, and one uncle.
Friends and family may call on July 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Lowery-Urban Funeral Home, 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral services will follow at 503 Clark Street, Waverly, NY, with Rev. James Muscatella officiating at St. James Church. Burial will take place in Tioga Point Cemetery with full military honors.
