Thuridur “Labba” Gowan

Thuridur Gowan, 93, lovingly known as Labba born on July 15, 1932, died on May 5, 2026.

She was born and raised in Iceland where she met her husband, Bill, who was in the US Navy. The two married and moved to Wavery, NY in 1955.

Labba loved to bowl and play cards with her 2 best friends of 70 years, Carol Merrill and Charlotte Tappan. She will be remembered for her optimism, her sense of humor, her class, elegance, and deep love of her family and close friends.

She was preceded by her beloved husband, Alton (Bill) L. Gowan; her children, Susan M. Parente and Richard J. Gowan; her mother, Pernilla Olsen Monsdottir; her father, Sigurgeir Kristjansson; and her brothers, Sveinn Birgir Sigurgeirsson and Sigurgeir Orn Sigurgeirsson.

Labba is survived by her children, Allan L. Gowan (Mary) and Kristen Roush; her sisters, Sigrun Sigurgeirsdottir, Kolbrun Anna Sigurgeirsdottir, and Inga Salsgiver. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many more nieces, nephews, and loved ones.

A Time of Visitation for family and friends will be held at Lowery-Urban Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main St., Athens, PA on Friday, May 15, 2026 from

11am – 1pm. Funeral services will follow at 1pm at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA.
