Roger Houghtalen Obituary

Roger Allen Houghtalen, 89, of South Waverly, PA, passed away at home on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, following his courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on August 11, 1936, in Barton, NY, the son of the late Henry and Alberta (Bush) Houghtalen.

Roger was a 1956 graduate of Sayre High School. He was a Veteran of the US Air Force, and an Aircraft Designer. Upon returning home, he was employed with Hubbard Building House. Roger also was employed with IBM as a Contractor and in the Maintenance Department at Athens High School. He was the previous owner of “The Old Mill Shop.”

He was a Foster Parent, fostering over 200 children over 35 years. Roger enjoyed gardening in his back yard, fishing, and woodworking.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Jeannette Houghtalen, brother, Carl Houghtalen, and close friend, Rosemary.

Roger is survived by children, Beth Houghtalen of Athens, PA, Elwin Houghtalen of South Waverly, PA, Melissa (Eric) Ulrich of Gillett, PA, Jason Houghtalen of Towanda, PA, Belinda (Nathan) Barnes of Blossburg, PA, Harold Houghtalen of Moultrie, GA, Jamie Houghtalen of Erie, PA, and Jonathan Houghtalen of Wavery, NY, 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends, Pat, Norm, and Billy Pineau.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are entrusted to Lowery-Urban Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA.

Memorial donations may be made in Roger’s name to: Falck Cancer Center at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, 600 Roe Avenue, Elmira, NY 14905.
