Penny R. White, 70, of Athens, Pa. passed away on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Penny was born in Barton, New York on Dec. 6, 1955 to Dale Pipher and Miriam Driscoll.
A proud Athens High School Bulldog, Penny went on to earn her Bachelor's degree from Mansfield University before embarking on a 40-year teaching career. Penny began her career at Epiphany Elementary School before joining the Snyder Elementary School family until her retirement in 2019.
Although she will be remembered fondly by many of her former students and co-workers, she will be most deeply missed by her family and friends.
Penny was a constant and familiar presence, always cheering others on, celebrating accomplishments big and small, and offering enthusiastic support whenever and wherever it was needed. Everyone felt seen and valued by Penny, as she had an extraordinary way of making all around her feel important and included.
Her home is a place of warmth and welcome, her smile a reassurance, and her friendship a gift that spanned decades. She modeled kindness, showed patience and was a true fan of all those lucky enough to be in her life.
Penny was a proud founding member of the Country Club, former Queen of the Ulster Boat Show and was a well-known speed walker along Main Street. She loved watching the Price is Right, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, as well as cheering on her Cincinnati Bengals.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Richard M. (Slippery) White, her amazing children Ashley Combs (Scott) and Cody White (Sara), mother-in-law Sarah White, sister Susan Hadlock (Tom), sister-in-law Barbara (Bip) White, uncle Eddie Pipher (Allison), aunts Jackie McNamara (Steve) and Kathy Scarboroug, cousin Lindsay Nixon (Andy), brother-in-law Mark Hill and nephews Carl Hill (Mallory), Dale Farr, and John Hadlock, and many great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by granddaughter Chandler Combs and her pride and joy, her grandson Lou Victor Combs.
She was preceded to Heaven by her parents, step father John Elinski, sister Judy Hill, father-in-law Joe White, brothers-in-law Joe "Skeeter" White and Stan White, sister-in-law Joann Moore, and many special pets.
It has been in the news recently that there will be no more Pennys minted, we're pretty sure our Penny broke the mold.
A time of visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lowery-Urban Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. at 225 South Main Street in Athens. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Epiphany Church at 304 South Elmer Ave. in Sayre.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Penny's honor to the Bradford County Humane Society, St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Guthrie Hospice.
