Marie Souto Obituary

Marie P. Souto, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 14, 1939, at Robert Packer Hospital to Thomas Leigh Powell and Eva Mae Powell, and she grew up in Camptown, Pennsylvania.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Leon Powell and Grover Powell; and her daughter, Cynthia McCarthy.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Leonard Souto, her children: Marc Souto; Liz Ross (Carl); Brian McCarthy (Cindi); Greg Souto (Sharon); Meloni Janzen (Scott); and Mona Roccia (Anthony).

Marie was a proud grandmother to Alexis Hayes-Leak (Taylor), Hannah Forsberg (Ryan), Joshua Souto, Nicole Stroup (Matt), Shane McCarthy (Kristen), Paige McCarthy, Connor Janzen, Anthony Roccia, Jr., and Sophia Roccia, eight great-grandchildren, her sister, Anna Mae Bateman, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

Marie attended Wyalusing High School, where she met Leonard in 1953 at an Easter square dance. Two years later, they were married. Per a promise made to her mother, Marie completed her high school diploma before joining Leonard in Germany while he served in the Army. Together, they spent 16 months in Germany before returning to the United States to begin their family in Rome, Pennsylvania. In 1960, they settled permanently on Laurel Hill Road, where they built a life and home filled with love.

Marie devoted her life to her family. She spent her days raising children, riding horses, and ensuring that little hands were always busy. In later years, she cherished helping to raise her grandchildren, passing down her legacy of love, strong values, and life lessons—especially when she said “no”, it meant “NO”.

A faithful servant of the Lord, Marie shared her deep love of Jesus with everyone she met. She will be remembered as the embodiment of unconditional love, a little bit of trouble, and unwavering devotion to her family.
