Llilburn A. “Bill’ Wall – American Hero
Llilburn A. “Bill” Wall, 101, an American Hero, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024 following a brief illness at Robert Packer Hospital.
He was born on June 5, 1923, in Sayre, PA, the son of the late Leslie and Martha (Clark) Wall.
Bill met his best friend and the love of his life, Alice Wolcott, at a dance, the two were married June 27, 1946 and spent 66 beautiful years loving and dancing together prior to her passing in 2012. Bill and Alice raised two daughters together, Paulette and Nikki, welcomed two grandsons, and three
great-grandchildren, enjoying their family time together. Bill and Alice loved traveling and seeing the United States and the world together. He also enjoyed going to the gym, doing crossword puzzles, and crocheting. He was known as the “go to guy” when those that crocheted couldn’t figure out what the next step was in their project. Bill was a very talented artist, painting beautiful landscapes and people, until his health prevented him from continuing.
Bill served in the US Air Force for 26 years, retiring as a Master Sgt. He was one of a very few who served during 3 wars overseas that the United States participated in, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. During WWII, Bill flew 37 missions over Germany, which included the Normandy Beach D-Day Invasion. During his time of service, Bill was the recipient of the coveted Distinguished Flying Cross. He also was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Ribbon w/4 Bronze Service Stars, Air Medal w/3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Longevity Service Award several times, w/2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, w/3 Oak Leaf Bronze Clusters, w/3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, and w/1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster.
On June 5th, Bill turned 101, and he felt privileged to travel to France for the 80th anniversary of D-Day on June 6th, which holds many memories for all those that were a part of that day. They travel from all over the world to visit the beach remembering what that time meant to them and so many and to visit with their comrades on that day, even though they may have never met them before. Bill took the emotional journey back in time, with tears flowing down his cheeks, he bent down to kiss the beach where so many made the ultimate sacrifice. He then gathered with those that remain, being honored by the Presidents of the United States and France, which for many may be their final journey to France. For Bill, it was his final journey and final salute on that day as he has now joined his comrades on the other side, watching down over the few that remain. There are no words to describe the man who was unassuming and never needed thanks for the sacrifices he made for his country however forever we are grateful to one of our True American Heroes. He was a lifetime member of the Sayre VFW Post #1536.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his beloved wife; Alice (Wolcott) Wall.
Bill is survived by his daughters; Paulette Dickerson of Naples, FL and Nikki Wall of Blue Diamond, NV, grandsons; Crispin Dickerson of Naples, FL and Jacob Dickerson of Naples, FL, great-grandchildren; Eveline Baker of Jacksonville, AL, Hailee Moon Dickerson of Naples, FL, and Charlie E.C.
