Leon C. McCarty, Jr.

Leon Charles McCarty, Jr., 80, of Athens, PA, passed peacefully with his family by his side at Robert Packer Hospital, on Sunday, December 15, 2024 following a brief illness.

He was born on May 24, 1944, in Waverly, NY, the son of the late Leon C., Sr. and Agnes (Scrivens) McCarty. Leon resided in Athens most of his life in his childhood home.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his loving wife; Beverly R. McCarty, granddaughter; Jamie Lynn Stack, brother-in-law; Mert Barrowcliff, and lifelong best friends; James and Pamela Dolan.

Leon is survived by his three daughters; Kelly (Wayne) Hicks, Brenda (Dale) Vanderpool, and Maureen Stack, his grandson who was a son in every aspect; Branden (Ashley) Myers, grandchildren; Jesse (Gabby) Vanderpool, Randi (Joel) Stack, Dillion (Melissa) Miller, and Sarah Franks, great-grandchildren; Payton Myers, Parker Myers, Branson Myers, Emma Vanderpool, Weston Kuhns, Kynlee Walters, Charlotte Garrison, and Layla Stack. He is also survived by his sisters; Linda Barrowcliff and Patricia McWain, and several nieces and nephews.

In June of 1966, Leon joined the US Marine Corp, during the Vietnam War, serving his country proudly. During his time in the military, he earned the National Defense Service Medal and Marksmanship Badge. He is a lifetime member, over 50 years, of the Athens American Legion Post #246.

Upon returning from his time in the service, Leon was employed with Shephard Hills Country Club for over 30 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved canoeing, and just spending time on the river.

More important to Leon than anything was his family. He loved all the countless family functions and events. He enjoyed his many trips to various casinos with his wife, Beverly. In the end, best said by Sarah, for all of his family: “He will always be our hero and gangster pops!”

Friends and family may call on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 from 11am – 1pm at the Lowery-Urban Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. Funeral Services will follow at 1pm.

Burial will follow at Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA with Military Honors accorded.
