Joseph "Joe" Szabo, Sr. Obituary

Joseph Szabo, Sr., 90, of passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, at his home in Chemung, New York, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on December 11, 1935, in Hungary, Joe’s life was marked by resilience, dedication, and a deep devotion to his family. In 1957, he immigrated to the United States, coming from the Hungarian Revolt, in pursuit of a better life and built a legacy rooted in hard work and love. Together with his wife Lois {nee Riker), whom he cherished for 64 years. Joe raised their three children in Burlington Township.

A skilled craftsman and entrepreneur, Joe owned and operated Five Points Auto Body Shop for over four decades. His commitment of quality and service earned him the respect of his community and customers alike. Beyond his professional life, Joe was an active member of the VFW Post #1536 in Sayre, Pennsylvania and the Hungarian Hunting Club in New Jersey-organizations that reflected both his heritage and values.

Joe found joy in simple pleasures and meaningful connections. He was the goalie for both Hungarian and American Soccer Teams for many years. He loved fishing, bowling, playing darts , and lending a hand to his son, Joe, with his business. These moments brought him happiness and strengthened the bonds he held dear. His family was more important to him than any hobby he had.

He is survived by his beloved wife Lois; their three children; Linda Szabo Gogan (Scott), Suzanne Hempel, and Joseph Szabo, Jr. (Crista); six grandchildren; Adam Caulfield, Savannah Conlin, Laura Caulfield, Colby Hempel, Hailey Sandner, and April Sandner; one great-grandchild; Lily; and an eagerly awaited great-grandson due in February.

Joe’s memory will live on through those who knew and loved him. May his legacy of generosity, strength, and devotion bring comfort to all whose lives he touched.
