Jan "Coop" Cooper
Born July 11, 1938 in NYC, Jan “Coop” Cooper, aka Henshaw, passed on May 3rd, after a fight against a rare and aggressive cancer. He was 86.
Loved and respected by many, he was an avid outdoorsman all his life. He had a meticulous eye for detail, a sharp mind, and an even sharper sense of humor that never left him.
He was a key member of the Chemung County Rod & Gun Club and the SVE Sportsman’s Club.
He loved to hunt and traveled through Wyoming, the Dakotas, through Northern Canada and as far as Alaska, where he collected his prized black bear.
He was a familiar face at Cowboy Action & strong contender at shooting competitions, eventually passing on his vast knowledge to his favorite students, the YHEC kids.
Jan worked at NYU, & taught at Elmira College & Mansfield University. He practiced psychology at the Elmira Psych Center for 30 years, and at a practice of his own in Sayre PA.
Jan is survived by his brother, wife, three children, and granddaughter, as well as his brother’s children and grandchildren.
Jan, and his Diamond Four persona, Henshaw, gave their all, all of the time. He was one of a kind, and gave the same advice to everyone, “a gun is always loaded, keep it pointed down.”
He was brilliant, funny, charismatic and will be deeply missed.
There will be a celebration of life at his heart and second home, the Chemung County Rod & Gun Club at a later date. The family is being cared for by Lowery-Urban Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Athens, PA.
