Helen E. Leonard, of Sayre, PA, passed away unexpectedly shortly after her 100th birthday on May 11, 2024.
She was born on February 18, 1924, in Asylum Twp., PA, the daughter of the late Fred and Mary (Pretzman) Cordner.
Helen was a very talented sewer and worked for many years at Blue Swan and when Sayre Lingerie purchased the business, her employment continued and after 40 years of dedicated service, she retired at the age of 72. Her talent was not just in sewing but in knitting, crocheting, Irish weaving, and needlepoint.
She enjoyed doing word puzzles. One of the things over the years, she enjoyed doing was spending time at her brother’s cottage, the Broken Oar. Helen always loved spending time with her family, she was loved dearly and will be missed by each of them.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her granddaughter Jill Shaffer, great-granddaughter Melissa Peters, and great-grandsons, Zachary Supachana and Nicholas Supachana, great-great grandsons James Shaffer and Lucas Williams, brothers Leon, Francis, and Raymond Cordner, and sister Ethel Marsh.
Helen leaves behind her 5 children Sandra (Myrt) Garrison of Ulster, PA, June (James) Shaffer of South Waverly, PA, Gary (Karen) Leonard of Duchesne, UT, Mark Leonard of Sayre, PA, and Randy Swackhammer of Tamaqua, PA, 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 27 great-great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-great grandchildren, her two fur-babies Jack and Sammy, and many nieces and nephews.
Following Helen’s wishes, all services will be private. The family is being cared for by Lowery-Urban Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Athens, PA.
