Duane Bond Obituary

Duane Alfred Bond, 95, of Orange City, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026.

Duane lived a life defined by service, strength, and steadfast love. He will be remembered for his dedication to his country, his pride in his family, and the remarkable love story he shared with Filomena, a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Born on August 30, 1930, Duane spent his early years in the Muncy, Pennsylvania before his family moved to Sayre, Pennsylvania during his senior year of high school. It was there that he met Filomena Polzella, the love of his life and the kind of love they write about in storybooks. He would later say that the moment he saw her, he told himself, “I am going to marry that girl!” He did just that in 1949, beginning a beautiful marriage that spanned 76 incredible years, filled with devotion, partnership, laughter, and unwavering commitment to one another.

He graduated from Sayre High School in 1948 and soon after answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. Beginning his career as an E3, Duane worked diligently through the ranks to become an officer and ultimately a Lieutenant Commander. The majority of his distinguished 24-year naval career was spent in the submarine force. He served aboard three submarines, two submarine rescue ships, and on the staffs of Commander Submarine Squadron Six and Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He also completed a memorable nine-month “world cruise” aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Canberra. Duane retired honorably from the Navy in 1971, having faithfully served his country with strength, discipline, and pride.

Following his military retirement, Duane continued his strong work ethic in the private sector, working for an industrial hosing company for 15 years before fully retiring.

Duane was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. Family was the heart of his life. He and Filomena cherished their time living in Pennsylvania and especially treasured the years spent close to the Polzella side of the family, where they spent their youth.  He found great joy in playing pool, traveling on cruises with his beloved wife, and gathering with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Their family was blessed to celebrate five generations together; a legacy that brought him immense pride.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Filomena,  his parents; his brother, Donald, and brothers-in-law: Modestino, Angelo, Michael, and Anthony Polzella.

He is survived by his sister, Sandi Mandarano (Bart); his brother, Scott Bond (Chris); his children, JoMarie Bond, Gary Bond (Glenda), and Julie Lux (Rick); his grandchildren, Cyndi Burton (Shane), Ricky Edwards, Krystle Hein (Paul), and Jonathan Lux (Alyssa); his great-grandchildren, Brent Cruz, Tayler Wood (Taylor), Paisley Lux, and Cash Hein; and his great-great-grandchildren, Carson Cruz, Presley Wood, and Chloe Wood. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Louise Polzella, as well as several nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Mark and Tamika, and to all who cared for Duane with such compassion and kindness in his final days. Their support meant so much to him and to the family, and they had also lovingly cared for Filomena during her time of need.
