David R. “Whip” Whipple, 76, of Milan, PA passed away at home surrounded by his family on Monday January 22, 2024, following an extended illness.
He was born on August 24, 1947, in Sayre, PA, the son of the late Ora and Hilda (Garris) Whipple.
David was a graduate of Athens High School, Class of 1967. He was a Veteran of the US Marine Corps, serving during the Vietnam War. He is a lifelong member of the Athens Boro Fire Department Diahoga Hose Company #6, the oldest living member having joined at the age of 18 and served as Fire Chief during the 1980's. He was a member of the Sayre VFW Post #1536 and the Nichols American Legion Post #1624.
David loved spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids. He could always be seen in the stands for his grandsons wrestling matches. He enjoyed golfing and hunting.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law Esther and Marcus Frisbie and brother-in-law Robert Roof.
David is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cathy D. (Springer) Whipple, children David R. II and Kari Whipple and Stacey D. (Lyle Garrity) Whipple, grandchildren Meghan “with whom he shared his birthdays with” (Mike Steele) Whipple, Kyle (Olivia Martin) Whipple, Dylan (Brittany Grimes) Whipple, and Damon Whipple, great grandchildren Olyviah, Owen, Carson, and Leela. He also is survived by his siblings Ora “Sonny” (Dorie) Whipple, Joanne (Fred) Bohlar, Richard (Marlena) Whipple, and Mary Jane Roof, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, special friends Charles and Evelyn “Iffie” Sandt, and Jerry Goodrich, and his cat “Damn Cat.”
Friends and family may call on Thursday, January 25, 2024, from 11am-1pm at the Lowery-Urban Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA. A celebration of life service will follow at the funeral home at 1pm with the Chaplain Linda Rogers officiating.
Burial will follow in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA with military honors accorded.
