David Rosenbloom Obituary

Prominent Athens businessman, David L. Rosenbloom, 80, passed away unexpectedly in St. Augustine, Fl., July 18, 2025. Born on July 6,1945 in Waterloo, NY, the son of Adelaide and Byron Rosenbloom. He was the devoted and loving husband of Laura Rosenbloom for 58 years.

David graduated from Athens High School in 1963. He was class president of his graduating class and involved in track and band. From an early age, he worked after school and summers at the family-run business. Jay Furniture Co. was started by his father and two uncles in 1942. The business in Athens was the first in Pennsylvania, with other stores in Olean, NY. and Geneva, NY and later Westfield, PA. The Athens business was taken over by his mother, Adelaide, in 1960, after the untimely death of his father. After high school, David joined the Army reserves and officially joined the business. In 1967, David opened and established Jay Carpet Co.in Athens. Both businesses became the cornerstones of the Athens business district. David was instrumental in leading the revitalization of Athens after two major floods and a devastating fire that occurred. He never gave up and continued to invest in his hometown. In 1996, Jay Carpet became Jay Carpet One and was expanded to Horseheads, NY.

David was a pillar of our community and was involved in many organizations. He helped establish Teaoga Square in Athens. He was a current President Ocean Gallery Board, and Vice- president Ocean Gallery Rental Board, Fl.

Above all, David loved being with his family and loved following his children and grandchildren’s activities. Laura and David were their biggest fans. For 35 years, David and Laura shared a cottage with their sister and brother-in-law on Keuka Lake, “Camp Dave-Ed”. Through the summer months, their children shared every weekend together, along with their parents and extended families. David and Laura especially loved their second home in St. Augustine Fl., where they enjoyed golf and the company of many great friends. He was a life-long fan of the NY Yankees.

David was predeceased by his parents; Byron Rosenbloom, Adelaide Rosenbloom Paluzzi, and step- father, James Paluzzi, half-sisters; Helene Rosenbloom, and Betsy Schwartz, half-brother, Morey Rosenbloom, brothers-in-law William Cotton, and Edward Swartz.
