Alberta H. Richie, 90, of Chemung passed away on Friday, July 25th, after declining health. Alberta came into this world in the midst of a blizzard in Tamaqua, PA, on April 16, 1935 and departed early on a warm, humid summer morning.
She spent her early years in Pittsburgh and Erie, PA, before her family settled in Philadelphia. She was active in her school orchestra and her church, Wharton Memorial Methodist Church. She also enjoyed time spent with family in White Haven, PA. After marrying Edward (Ned) Richie in 1960, they moved to Wilmington, DE and later Smyrna, DE.
Alberta was a very skilled knitter having started as young child knitting doll clothes while her mother, grandmother, and aunts worked on their own projects. Her sweaters, afghans, and other items will always be treasured. Gardening was another much-loved activity and she leaves behind beautiful perennial beds and a love of gardening in all of her children.
Alberta and her husband, Ned, moved to Chemung in 2005 and really enjoyed all that the area had to offer, especially the museums in Corning and the wildlife right outside their door.
She was predeceased by her parents, Howard Hatmaker and Ida Mattice Hatmaker, her husband, Ned, and her granddaughter, Andrea Guindon. Alberta is survived by her daughter, Linda (David) Guindon; sons, James (Eileen) Richie and Kevin (Gina Marie) Richie; granddaughters, Megan (Doug) Couden, Erin (Steve) Armstrong, and Olivia DeLuca Leh; six great-grandsons; 2 great-great grandchildren; niece, Julie Keene (Chris) Eskesen and great-nephew Ian Keene Eskesen.
The family wishes to thank CareFirst NY for their exceptional care in her final months and Jenn for her loving care and companionship.
